Growing up in a different place and time is something that is talked about and reminisced about a lot by old people like me. It’s not that I’m ancient, it’s just that everyone seems so young looking to me these days. And tall…

Bruce Hedgepeth MD August 5, 2015Hey welcome back. Good to see you. Still hurtling through space spinning and orbiting, I see. Still haven’t fallen off the rock either. I wonder how those people and critters in Antarctica do it hanging upside down and all. Weird.
Since we talked last, how’s your journey been going? A lot can happen in one second, one minute, one day; let alone one week.

Bruce Hedgepeth MD July 29, 2015The journey that we’re on is an interesting one, isn’t it? What? Yeah, you know; our journey now, in this life, at this time, on this big earth which is both spinning and orbiting all at once. It’s making me dizzy, all that spinning, orbiting, twisting and turning. So much so that I think I’m gonna hurl! No man, it’s not hurl; it’s hurtling. That’s what you’re doing through cosmic space, man; you’re hurtling through space gravitationally attached to the third rock from the sun, Mother Earth.

Bruce Hedgepeth MD July 22, 2015The common thread is the maturation process from a carefree childhood to the mid years with trials, tribulations, and testing; continuing to and through a position of maturity and leadership as an adult. Surely, these are important components of the circle of life…

Bruce Hedgepeth MD July 15, 2015The team of administrative, medical, business, and marketing members took over to think of ways to get the device in circulation and to get used by the medical community. Of course we were excited; but we ultimately needed to find an avenue to get this device on the market.

Bruce Hedgepeth MD July 8, 2015The invention story of the Safety Shield anti-needle stick device goes back a little farther than previously documented in Part II of this series. There is a little more history to it that helped lay the foundation for the eventual idea and ultimate product. That history goes back to my formative radiology residency days from 1990 to 1994. The Safety Shield was patented in 2012.

Bruce Hedgepeth MD July 1, 2015Previously I wrote a little tongue in cheek piece about May being National Inventor Month and a brief excerpt on my experience as an inventor.
This time, however, I would like to take a little different and more serious approach to the topic of inventions and inventing, and briefly describe my journey in the process of inventing the Safety Shield, a medical device designed for the prevention of needle sticks.

Bruce Hedgepeth MD June 24, 2015Great things happened last month: April showers brought May flowers; Mother’s Day; May Day(whatever that is); kids graduated from schools pre-K to college; Memorial Day and the three day weekend it brings, aka the official start to summer, boating, and grilling seasons; and the Indianapolis 500 race which celebrated its 99th running this year.
But wait, there’s more, and it’s important to all of us…

Bruce Hedgepeth MD May 4, 2015Watching a fire burn in an outdoor fireplace on a brisk Saturday morning once again reminded me that a fire has a life of its own. It seems to have needs and wants. It needs fuel to burn. It needs oxygen to combine with the fuel. It needs heat to help make the fuel burn and prepare the fuel-in-waiting. And it seems to want to show-off with a self-sustaining chain reaction to keep it all going. Like most humans, it doesn’t want to quit, give up, or die out.
